Overview
The University of Alabama will not require standardized ACT or SAT scores from students applying through the Fall 2026 Semester. UA is updating its holistic admissions review process for first year-undergraduate applicants for the 2027 and 2028 academic years. Crimson Compass was developed by the Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education to provide support for students preparing for and navigating the college admissions process.
With accessible pathways combining test prep, college-planning guidance and exposure to future academic and career opportunities, we’re meeting students where they are in their journey.
Crimson Compass offers two programs:
Program Snapshot – Tide to Success (Online)
- Self-paced online course covering college-planning fundamentals and ACT prep
- Designed to be completed in approximately 6-7 hours total
- Free for all students in grades 9-12 in the state of Alabama
- Cost of $200 for out-of-state students
- Course material is available online for two years
- Launching September 2026, with registration opening July 1
Program Snapshot – UA ACTivate (Residential Experience)
- On-campus program combining ACT prep with real college experiences
- Helps students build confidence in navigating academic resources and campus life
- Students are given rigorous, in-person standardized prep materials and guidance
- Summer 2026 sessions: June 15-18 and July 13-16
- Cost of $799
- Ideal for high school sophomores and juniors, as students must be aged 16 and older.

Which Program is Right for You?
Considerations for parents and students:
- Which learning style fits you best: flexible and self-paced or structured and immersive?
- Does online-only meet your needs, or do you prefer in-person instruction?
- Do you want ACT assistance, or do you also want an immersive UA experience?
- Would you rather take an extra class during the summer or during the school year?
- Will you be at least 16 years old at the beginning of one of the UA ACTivate summer sessions?
